ExD Helps Library Staff Deliver Bold, Community-Centered Programming During Increasingly Complex Times

In turbulent times, public libraries are even more critical as trusted places where people can engage with ideas and each other to help build informed and connected communities. Born from this need is Embolden by Design (ExD), a holistic training experience to help library staff deliver bold programs that address a deeply fragmented, polarized society.

Developed by three experts with decades of experience in the library world as staff, consultants, volunteers, and advocates, ExD builds off their collective knowledge in strategy, community engagement, communications, and evaluation to offer compassionate support to libraries as they provide vital services to communities. The ExD team partners with library staff to co-create a program series using bold strategies and proven frameworks for community building, helping staff meet the needs of the current moment.

“Every day, we’re witnessing intense divides on the news, in our communities, and even at our own dinner tables,” says Stacie Ledden, consultant and co-founder of Embolden by Design. “As that intensity has grown over the last several years, libraries are often at the epicenter of these discussions and yet continue to be stalwarts for learning and engagement in our communities. Though library staff play an essential role in bringing people together, it can also be intimidating. That’s why we’re here. ExD isn’t about teaching staff what they already know how to do. It’s about strengthening the mindset, capacity, and practice of boldness during complex times.”

ExD includes collaborative program development and training, as well as promotions and evaluation support. Through this holistic training experience, staff gain the tools and confidence they need to host programs that build empathy, challenge stereotypes, encourage active listening, and champion diverse perspectives.

“Libraries have always been places where people come to make sense of the world. Today, that work is harder than ever. Economic uncertainty, reduced public services, and deepening cultural and political divides are reshaping what communities need from their libraries — and what libraries need from their staff,” says Embolden by Design co-founder Laureen Trainer and owner of Trainer Evaluation. “Through our training and supportive services, library staff will gain the preparation and assurance they need to approach complicated topics with a bold mindset and the skills they need to assess the impact of their programs.”

Freelance writer and Embolden by Design co-founder Amanda Mininger adds, “Not everyone is aware of the full scope of what’s happening in America’s public libraries. Our PR and communications toolkit helps the library promote its program series and take control of the narrative in a positive way — moving beyond the negative headlines around book bans, funding cuts, and politicization to showcase how libraries improve people’s quality of life and connection to others.”

ExD is well suited for small- to mid-sized libraries that are innovative, willing to take smart risks, and committed to investing in staff development and community engagement. “One of the best things libraries do for their communities is invite people in and create memorable programs that make a difference in our collective well-being. At ExD, we’re not only proud to be part of this legacy, we’re also excited to help libraries create and tell their stories of impact, especially when the stakes are this high,” says Ledden.
